How Home EV Charging works

Battery energy added = battery capacity × change in charge percentage. Divide by one minus the charging-loss fraction to estimate energy from the outlet, then multiply by the electricity rate.

A worked example

These sample values illustrate the calculation. Use your own numbers in the calculator for your result.

Example inputs
Usable battery capacity (kWh)
60
Current charge (%)
20
Target charge (%)
80
Electricity ($/kWh)
0.18
Charging loss (%)
10
Estimated charging cost
$7.20
Energy from outlet
40 kWh
Added to battery
36 kWh

Assumptions and limits

Charging loss is the share of wall energy that does not reach the battery. Your utility rate may vary by time of day.

Check lender terms and manufacturer guidance. These estimates do not replace a mechanical inspection.
